Windows 10 - some important applications will not open

Hi Experts,

I'm running Windows 10 Pro.

Just in the last hour or so I cannot get File Explorer or Chrome to open.
Other apps, e.g. Firefox, Edge and MS Access, all open OK.

After clicking the icons on the taskbar I can see the "previews" of these apps - so they are starting up, but not displaying the full GUIs.

I have rebooted.

sfc /SCANNOW does not report any errors.

Ok, what's happened in the last hour that you remember? Have you installed any Video card or Microsoft updates recently?  Changed the resolution on your desktop?  Tried restarting the machine?  Besides sfc, what other steps have you taken to resolve the problem?

Thanks, Andrew,

I haven't installed any apps or updates in the last few hours.

But I just had my 2nd crash today without warning - no "BSOD" style blue screen.

Also, in the month or so I have had my Surface Pro 2017 I have had 4 "Critical Structure Corruption" Errors.
I am going to run memory and CPU checks as outlined here.

Hi Andrew,

I solved the problem.

I am running 2 monitors off a Surface Hub connected to a Surface Pro tablet.
So potentially I have 3 screens.

The apps that "wouldn't open" were actually opening on my Surface Pro screen, but the lid was down so I could not see them.

You are asking it right but not all rundll32 errors are related to corrupt or missing files sometimes spyware launches its own code to use this file. So, don't be so confused there are many fixes for this problem but I'd recommend going with the Clean boot if you don't know how to do this then follow these simple steps:
1. Open the run window
2. Type msconfig and click OK.
3. Under the service tab select Hide all Microsoft Services and then disable all.
4. Now, You will find Task Manager under startup tab click on it and end task. Now you will be able to resolve this problem. If still you face any difficulties in any step then check the article of ValidEdge on critical structure corruption for better information.
