connecting to db instance

I am willing to install sql server express on a computer and after full installation, including SSMS when I try to connect to a base instance I am always getting the error telling me that I am unable to connect to the db instance, which puts me scratching my head.
I have verified user name (no password) and computer name.
Can anyone help?

Using SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable named pipes:

In SQL Server Configuration Manager, in the console pane, expand SQL Server Network Configuration.

In the console pane, click Protocols for <instance name> (your database instance).

In the details pane, right-click named pipes, and then click Enable.

In the console pane, click SQL Server Services.

In the details pane, right-click SQL Server (<instance name>), and then click Restart, to stop and restart the SQL Server service.

Bye, Olaf.

You're welcome.

Notice, this is by design and not just a setup glitch. You'll have to remember this is a necessary step for SQL Server configuration. Defaults also disable any network access for Express, Developer or Evaluation editions, at first. See TCP/IP column of
