I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I used a logon and logoff script in group policy to append a line to a text file on a server.  something like this:

logon.bat:

@echo off
For /f "tokens=2-4 delims=/ " %%a in ('date /t') do (set mydate=%%c-%%a-%%b)
For /f "tokens=1-2 delims=/:" %%a in ('time /t') do (set mytime=%%a%%b)
echo Log On %Computername%, %Username%, %mydate%_%mytime% >>\\server\share\textfile.text

Open in new window

and logoff.bat:
@echo off
For /f "tokens=2-4 delims=/ " %%a in ('date /t') do (set mydate=%%c-%%a-%%b)
For /f "tokens=1-2 delims=/:" %%a in ('time /t') do (set mytime=%%a%%b)
echo Log Off %Computername%, %Username%, %mydate%_%mytime% >>\\server\share\textfile.text

Open in new window

This gives you simple data that you can use.

There are drawbacks.  This data would need manipulating if you wanted to write reports.  If you are seeing how much time they are working, it doesn't account for people who lock their computer and walk away or let their computer go to screen saver.

You can look for events in the security log for logon, logoff, unlock etc, but I haven't seen one for when the screen saver locks it.

My solution works and is the only solution offered.  While the OP asked for an enterprise solution and it isn't an off the shelf product he can buy, I think this fits.  It is usually in an enterprise environment where IT staff script stuff in this way.
