How to set up remote file access for users using Sharepoint

Hi

Currently the staff and students don’t have access to their Home drive and shared drives and they use external hard disk and USB to transport data. I would like to stop this and set up remote file access.

We do have Microsoft volume licensing agreement in place and have license do download SharePoint.
Please let me know if I will be able to set up remote file access for using SharePoint or please let me know if there is any other software that can do this functionality and best way to set up this.

Tutorials will be great thanks in advance.
Any suggestions and help much appreciated.

I believe you're talking about on-premises SharePoint? You wouldn't open up remote access to that. It would introduce all sort of security holes in your environment to allow such access.

Do you have any free Office 365 access with your agreement? Letting your students access OneDrive or even SharePoint online with a cheap student subscription would be safer and easier. For remote access keep it in the cloud.

I understand with the security holes with on premises share point.

Will I be able to move all our Data ( Total size 2TB) of home drives  and shared drives to SharePoint online.

Another concern is we don't have a redundant internet connection  and if the primary connection fails users will not be able to access the home drives and shared drives?

I think a hybrid approach where you join your farm with the cloud is the likely best solution. A 2Tb migration is quite an undertaking. However we're talking about a serious project.

But I stand by my original comment, don't open SharePoint to the internet.

Other alternative is to invest in a secure SSL tool so users can remote into the network from outside and access. Note - this is not open to the internet, it's VPN.

But no quick fix for this sort of thing I'm afraid.
