Pros and cons of using List over arrays

What are the pros and cons of using List<String> over an array of String[]
In joshua bloch he suggests always to use List over array... But i couldnt think of some convincing reasons  with some practical
examples for this.
Please suggest some examples and why one should use one over the other ..

It really depends on what you are trying to do with your code.  Arrays have a fixed size, where with a list you can always add and remove elements from the list without the programmer really having to worry about the size of the list.  For this reason I usually end up using List, unless it is some data set that will never change.

There may be times when you need to split a String into a String[] using String.split(String), in which case you obtain an array of course, which can then be made into a List using Arrays.asList().

Arrays also has methods for performing binary searches on sorted data.
