SharePoint 2010 - Security Groups Query

I have a SharePoint 2010 site and had a question on the permissions groups.

I have added to the site the 'everyone' group which includes every authenticated user - they have read and edit permissions.

With this, I would like to add another group called 'Accounting' which includes some of the people from the 'everyone' group but only give them read permissions.

Is there an easy way to ensure that the Accounting group, although they may appear in both groups, will only have read rights?

The reason I ask is I cannot control the 'Everyone' group.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A few point to consider:

  • Never use the Everyone when granting permissions, not just in SharePoint but in all Windows systems.
  • The contribute permission will override the read only permission
  • If you have content that the Accounting should not modify, but everyone else can, then you may need to consider your site design.

Good luck...
