lotus symphony in dos will not print to HP 5 printer. works fine in windows environment. driver not loaded error.

i have an old HP 6360 computer and an HP 5 printer that i use for printing financial statements and envelopes. i am still using lotus's symphony in dos for the f/s and office 97 for the envelopes. my os win 98 became corrupted and i had to start over with another hard drive. i was able to install the old drive as a slave and obtain the files and software copied to the new hard drive. the system is up and running and i can print envelopes in windows w/ the office 97 from the templates that i retrieved. symphony files and f/s runs fine and i can retrieve all files but i can't print the files on  the HP 5 printer. the "printer driver not loaded" error. i have the original 3 1/2 diskettes that came with the printer and have attempted to load the drivers numerous times and followed the directions as best i can and have 2 large manuals for symphony that i have had since 1984. this is a complicated program for an accountant but not a programmer i guess. i don't how the drivers are loaded to the program in dos and how it works. the printer drivers are supposed to go to a file called "lotus" . i don't know whether the program has to be on the root directory along with the "lotus" file and loaded when dos boots etc. i don't understand how it works and at my memory is not 100% from something that was done that long ago. this machine is a stand alone as is not hooked to the internet. basic office tasks only but it still has a function. thanks.

You may need to redirect the printer in DOS.

NET USE LPT2 \\MIS_01\MIS_LPT1 where the printer is named here MIS_LPT1

You need to fit the statement above to your situation.

For DOS programs, any drivers are part of the program itself. Hence, you need to install the driver from within Symphony itself, or from some other installer that is part of Symphony. Unfortunately, with ancient software like that, documentation is almost impossible to find - except by users like yourself, who still have the originals manuals and disks.

Can you select different printers in Symphony? If yes, which models are shown? Is there anything in any menu that lets you add a printer?

after working on this for a week off and on i finally got it running about 4:45 yesterday afternoon. the "lotus" driver file created by symphony had somehow been switched to a read only file. i discovered this by accident in the properties of this file. when i removed that protection of that file i went into the install of symphony and changed the equipment the program was to use. stripped out all the unnecessary crap such as communications graphics etc and then i got a printer error after the change to the "lotus" file. then i took a good look at the computer and software and changed to printer port to lpt2 on symphony and changed the physical connection to the computer and it started printing. i installed 3 different hard drives and installed several different dated symphony programs and ran the HP recovery disc more times than i can count and finally got it to print. the HP printer diskette drivers were superfluous .  it had been so long since i had went through this stuff i had forgotten. i am HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. i was afraid i would have to reinvent the wheel and use another new program to create a new set of financial statements on a new program instead of just changing the dates and numbers on an existing set of statements. however i am not sure i saved anytime. i am still stuck in 1985. I spend most of my time in the tax business with new updates several times a day.
