How to get a shape to have a number inside the shape with a color background.

Adding character (number) to a shape in word 2013 so it centers in the box or triangle. I create the shape in word, shapes and add a 1 into the shape but once I try to make the shape smaller like about a quarter inch I lose the number? How can I create a shape and insert a number one so it falls in the middle and I can make it smaller I am fitting this on a map.
