Creating a new SQL login I get the following error

Creating a new SQL login I get the following error
An object (User or Built-in security principal) with the following name cannot be found "rmalone". Check the selected object types and locations for accuracy and ensure that you have typed the object name correctly, or remove this object from the selection.

I am trying add my sharepoint setup account to sql and add the roles.

Sounds like you're on the SQL Server itself. You need to select the AD to search for your user name first. When the error comes from a  script, here you need to specify the domain also: YOUR_DOMAIN\rmalone.

I think you're trying to create a database user and not a SQL Server login.
Can you provide the steps that you're using or even better, a screen shot?
