Is there any advantages/ disadvantages to creating a Microsoft account with a Gmail account over a new one which would be through Hotmail or Outlook

Hi,

We plan to create a Microsoft account to use with Windows Whiteboard and Cortana.

We already have a Gmail account.

The plan is that we create a Microsoft account using our Gmail account.

Before doing this, we would like to know if we will miss out if we make a new Microsoft account with Gmail rather than Hotmail or Outlook.

We would like to know:
1. If we create a new Microsoft account via our Gmail account, can we access our old Gmail emails when logged in with Microsoft account
2. Is there any advantages/ disadvantages to creating a Microsoft account with a Gmail account over a new one which would be through Hotmail or Outlook
3. Will we miss out on any features if we create a Microsoft account with a Gmail account

Thanks,
Robbie

Basically the Microsoft account using gmail email address would only let you sign into Microsoft services using that address. It won't include any mailbox or email features as these would still be on your gmail account (it doesn't transfer the gmail email account over to Microsoft, you are simply using the email address as a logon name).

If you want a mailbox associated with the Microsoft Account you would need to setup a new account with outlook.com or hotmail.com as the email address.

You can use any email address you want for a Microsoft Account, but then (as noted above) you access Microsoft Services with this. It does not affect Gmail.

I use a non-Microsoft email address as my Microsoft Account and it works fine. That does not interfere with my other email.

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your input.

1. So am I right in saying that when you create a Microsoft account with a Gmail email address, it is the same as creating a Microsoft account except you are skipping the step where you include phone number, age and all that profile information?

2. If I was to create this Microsoft account with a Gmail email address, would it be like a blank slate as in with no emails in inbox or are you saying there is no email service available for this account, with this account only able to use Microsoft services other than sending/receiving emails?

3. So is the only difference between creating a Microsoft account with Gmail OR with Outlook/ Hotmail to do with the Mailbox/ email features?

Thanks,
Robbie

1. More or less yes, but you still (optionally) provide other profile information.

2. Yes. An Outlook.com account will be created but no mail will come to it unless you so designate. That is how my email address works.

3. Yes. Gmail has different features than Outlook.com. I have a Gmail account that has nothing to do with the above.

Hi John,

Thanks for the help.

If I create the Microsoft account via Gmail, will this Microsoft account cause problems for the actual Gmail account or vice versa?

Thanks,
Robbie

No I don't think it will. I have Mail.com (Gmail  competitor) and no issues. My Microsoft stuff remains separate from Mail.com so I see no issues with Gmail
