IBM x3500 ATB-200 RAID adapter replacement

Hi,

I have an IBM server x3500 and I have problem at boot with it. When it boot , at the RAID controller init, it Write 'Controller manager initializing...' for 15 minutes and after it write 'Controller manager failed'.

As I saw the controller look like a RAM dimm. The controller is an ATB-200 from Adaptec (FRU:25R8076). As the description from IBM and other sites,  it is the whole controller but many told me that is only cache memory.

I already order a new one but I'm not sure it is the problem. When I take it off, the computer does nothing and the diagnostic LED stuck at CPU.

My question is, if the new controller failed, is there any other SAS adapter that I can buy, used or new, to replace my ATB-200 that I can install without delete and reconfigure my existing array? I have a RAID 1 array and a RAID 5 array. Motherboard has pci-e X8 and pci-x connector.

Thank you!

Dany

You need the original RAID controller to have your RAID-1 and RAID-5 arrays recognized.

But there's no equivalent model in pci-e or pci-x available that could work?

It's a very old board. Your best bet of recovery is obtaining the exact missing component.

It is a whole controller and not a DIMM, there's RAM on one side of it and the controller chip on the other side. There are several ServeRAID 8K on eBay, alt part no 25r8088.

Have you reached out to IBM?

Yes I call them. It's longer to get it than via some ebay sellers. It take 3-4 days. I wait the one arriving today but I hope it will work.

That would be the best approach. The deal with RAIDs they sometimes store information on drives and sometimes on a controller itself. So if you are to plug in something foreign you might loose valuable metadata. This will cause you to seek professional RAID recovery services.

The problem is not data. We backup everyday so we will loose 1 day of work. The problem is to get up and running fast.

If you're in a hurry to get it back up best order a motherboard on sale or return too, but you'll need the Model number of the server and serial no and type no to be guarantte dt's the right one.
