How to use text values in pivot table?

Need help on Excel from an expert that knows far more than I do.  I have a pivot table, but pivot tables cannot display text values as we need.  I recall seeing someone who did something similar in the past , but I cannot seem to find anything.

If I recall, formulas were used, but I could not create any that worked for the solution we need.
If this can be done directly in Share point somehow, great, but I can easily refresh the data from a linked .iqy file
Thank a million for looking!

See Ejgil's attached file above. He's created a pivot table, but in the field settings for his value field, he's created a custom format type that displays the NAME of the value, rather than a simple sum.
