Exchange 2016 Send Connector to Smarthost Using Only One Source Server

I have a send connector that sends to a smart host.  The connector is configured with [2] Exchange 2016 source servers from the same AD site.  When sending email outbound, only one source server is being used to deliver to the smart host.  Is this expected behavior?  I would like to load balance across both Exchange 2016 source servers.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It is expected behavior.

How dispersed are your mailboxes across servers?  The outbound server should (in most cases) be the primary path out of your environment depending on where the senders mailbox resides.  For example, if SERVER1 and SERVER2 are configured as source servers for your send connector, and MAILBOX1 resides on SERVER1, in theory, it should leave through SERVER1.  The converse is true for MAILBOX2 if resides on SERVER2.

Is that not what you are experiencing?
It may be difficult to load balance outbound mail before it leaves Exchange.

Thanks Todd, I'm interested in the case where SERVER1 and SERVER2 are not in different sites, but in the same site.  I would like both source servers to load balance outbound email to Internet.

I am describing a single-site scenario.

Thanks for the article, but looks like that is for load balancing external smart hosts.  I would like to load balance across source servers.

I offered the article as the option for your request.  You can not do what you are requesting with just Exchange servers.  The only other option is with smart hosts.
