MS Word 2010 versus MS Word 2013 files - What are the differences?

What is the difference between a 2010 MS Word file and a 2013 MS Word file.
There must be a difference because when I save a 2010 file in MS Word 2013, I get the message box shown in the graphic below.
Can I open 2013 MS Word files in 2010?
err

Yes you can. That message means the file was save originally as .DOC but both Word 2010 and 2013 support .DOC and .DOCX
