Sending internal email through IMAP account

We have an internal Exchange 2010 server.
Most users are on Windows/outlook and have no issues.
However, one user on mobile IOS, his email client is configured as IMAP account, with SMTP server with the external server IP address.

When he sends emails to an internal user, his emails go to the junk folder with a message 'Domain does not exist'

How do I fix this issue?

Have you confirmed that the client is actually putting in a valid FROM address on his IMAP client on his phone? Clients must type in their own email address when configuring the IMAP client and he could have easily typed an invalid one. Is the domain, one that is in your Accepted Domains??

what happens when he sends similar email via OWA?

Would his phone support downloading the Outlook client off the apple/android store and just going ActiveSync?

- I'll have to check about typing his own email address
- The domain is an accepted domain (it is the internal domain)
- Sending from OWA works OK
- I had problems configuring outlook client with exchange sync on another apple computer
