I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you enabled the hidden Administrator account or have another account on the system with Administrator privileges, that account can reset the password for the problem account.

If the problem account made a Windows Password Reset CD or USB stick, the password can be reset using that.

There are other options, but they are rather shady in nature.

No admin account, and no password reset usb.
Did you use a Microsoft account or a local account?

If it is a local account, you can use this tool:

There's also a way (a bit convoluted) to reset the local account by booting from an install disk.

If it is a Microsoft account, look into the password reset options through the web login.

Local.  It's a Lenovo G41 laptop.  I downloaded the pogo and put on usb.  Tried to boot off it via BIOS but no luck.

Haven't tried to boot from Win 10 install disk yet.  Would that give the option to reset PW?

If you can run the Repair from the install disk, no, it will not reset the password.
If you back up and do a fresh install, then you can set a new password.

I'll give it a go
There are many guides on to regain access to one's system
For Windows 10" download and create a bootable USB using media creator.
Boot the system using the USB.
Enter advanced, cd to c:\windows\system32
rename utilman.exe to utilman.bak
Copy cmd.exe utilman.exe

Let the system boot normally,
Hit the ease access at login screen.
Depending what you are after, you gave a command window running at system level that allows you to create a new user, add them to the administrator group, or reset the password on the account.

You would need to reverse the process after gaining access to avoid leaving the system with this bypass where anyone hitting ease access will get a system running cmd window.

>>   Tried to boot off it via BIOS but no luck.  <<  test if you can boot from it on another system
you may also have to disable secure boot - and /or use legacy settings, to be able to boot from another device than the windows disk drive
