Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable

My Seagate Backup halts after about one minute . Never completes a backup.
Gets as far as 5% and then halts.
The Seagate drive has three terabytes and my data is about 300 gig. so space is not an issue.
I'm running Windows 7
I'm running the latest Seagate backup dashboard.
And the drive is the "Backup Plus Slim Portable"

you can also test if it works when connected via a POWERED USB hub, especially when connected to an usb 2 port
how is it connected? usb 2 or 3 ?

-- I'm plugging my drive into the front USB receptacle. How can I determine if it's USB 2 or 3?
-- I ran the "short" version of the seatools tests and they came out 100% okay. BTW, I just bought the drive and performed a full backup using the crappy standard windows 7 backup program. So that works although molasses slow. The Seagate backup program supposedly works more quickly which is why I wanted to use that.
