I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

#1 nothing is safe on the usenet (oversimplification I know).. it is not a trustworthy source.  I would assume that you would want some sort of filtering.

What you would want is the headers ONLY to then filter.  If you were to download everything from alt.binaries.boneless, alt.binaries.warez, alt.binaries.hdtv average over 1 Million messages per day.
Depending upon the size of your NAS and your internet speed if I was to just download the full alt.binaries.hdtv my 12TB's would be full in less than a week and this does not even include matching the pars to ensure that I have a complete copy of the file and then extracting the string of .RAR's into actual data files.

You also need a subscription to a site that does get all of the newsgroups and preferably one with a decent retention period.  i.e. giganews or newsleecher.  Not all ISP's supply newsgroups. Without a subscription to a paid service you will have bandwidth caps. This will cost you approx $120USD/year is this affordable? You will also require an unlimited internet connection from your ISP or you blow by any bandwidth limit in a very short period of time.

Any file from the usenet is a potential virus or ransomware vector

I would not trust any executable, any WMV or WMA file or any file that 'requires' you to download a codec.  There are billions of spam messages on every newsgroup every year.  These are usually password protected files.  There is some evidence that the contents of these files are illegal i.e. child pornography.

Then there are just websites that post to usenet but password protect the files i.e alt.binaries.abook where to get the password you have to become a member for additional cost to you..

I do not know of any software that will run on the synology box all by itself, personally I use newsleecher for software and giganews as provider
