Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2010 freeze when trying to open or save as.

All of my office 2010 programs freeze  whenever I try to "open" or "save as".  The file explorer dialogue box never renders, and instead the entire program freezes.    This only started happening recently, never had problems before.   Powerpoint, Word, Excel....none of them will render the save/open file dialogue, they all freeze.  I tried a repair of the installation but to no avail.  Would love any suggestions.  

This is what generates in the event viewer:   "The program EXCEL.EXE version 14.0.7192.5000 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. "

Unfortunately, that's a generic error I've seen multiple times over the years - tracking down the cause involves a little bit of trial and error detective work.

The first thing to do is to check Windows Event Viewer and look for any related errors being reported there so you're on the right track. But not just the generic error you've indicated.

Are you able to open files by double clicking on them?

Try after disabling your AV protection. Any joy?

If not;

Do you have Addins installed in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint? Disable all and see if that helps. Also disable your AV once all Addins have been disabled as sometimes, the two can interact.  Still no good?

Rather than a repair, try a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office 2010. Use a Microsoft supported tool such as this one to ensure complete removal of Office 2010. Here is a downloadable version of an Office 2010 removal tool. There is also a third-party solution to remove all traces of Office from a PC available here or you could use Revo Uninstaller in a pinch. The first one I've linked to should be fine though.

I've always been able to resolve this error, but it's always taken a little detective work to find the cause.

Since reinstall did not work, try the following:  Make a new, test Windows User Profile (Account).  Log into the new Windows Account and test the Office Programs.

check the add-on and disable them (file-options-addin-and click go)
also, click start - run msword , this will open word in safe mode, try to open a file a file and save it. hense:
1. if it saves ok, then you have an adddin or a plugin that make the issue
2. if the issue remains, then try to reinstall office or re,move it and install it again
