Promote domain controller 2012R2

can i promote a domain controller in our main site and then move /ship it to a remote site?
we do have vpn lines.
what steps do i need to take in ad when we power on the server?
or is it just better to promote the server when it is in the remote site?
never done this so not sure what is best.
thanks.

I would promote it at the remote site to keep DNS clean and free of bad records pointing to an incorrect server IP.

Either way should work, no real "correct" answer.

If connectivity across the VPN link is reasonably fast. (anything better than ADSL), and I was taking the server with me to site, I would probably promote it on site.

If connectivity is slow, and users run VOIP across it or something, and the server is being boxed up, sent and plugged in onsite, I would probably promote it first.

Thanks for te answers , the old box is still up and running , its just to replace the old box with a new one. We have about 14 domain controllers in different country's like Netherlands , France , China, US etc. I read from comments :
If it is not really nessesay then its better do it onsite.

Thansk.
