Server 2016 standard licencing

I want to install a 2016 Standard server, I will as I understand it use this as an installed Hyper V only role host with two Server 2016 clients as included in the licensing.

My question is, I have a 2012 server I need for legacy reasons and I want to run in on this same server until it is retired. Standard server says it only supports 2x Hyper V clients is this clients full stop or is this just what I can install with the standard licence. Say I want 2 x 2016 1 x 2012 and a W10 instance providing I have licences for the W10 and 2012 can I do this?

I know this seems like a silly question but I cannot get anyone to give me a clear answer!

yes, you can do that. Windows 2016 will give you 2 VM, and if you want additional VM, then you simple buy Windows Server license, and deploy more VM.

So, you can install Windows 2016 with Hyper-V role only, and then deploy 2x2016VM, and 1x2012VM.
For client OS, like Windows 10 you need client OS license, so if you have it, then you can deploy it as well.

PS> You can also use datacenter license with unlimited number of VM, if you want to deploy many VM. As for Linux, you can deploy as many as you want, since they don't count.

Great exactly what I wanted to hear, I know I need the relevant licences for each instance but it has been remarkably difficult getting a definitive answer like this!
