can a Trial Windows Server 2016 Standard License be activated with a Software Assurance License without re-installation?

Server 2016 Licensing - can a Windows Server 2016 Standard Trial License be activated with a Software Assurance License without re-installation?

I'm doing some work for a charity who have a free Microsoft Windows Server Software Assurance license on the way to them, however I need to setup their server this weekend.  Can anyone confirm, if I use the free trial download of 2016 Standard (it'll be a Hyper-V host but I'd prefer the GUI) can I upgrade it once they received their license keys, without re-installation?

Many Thanks,

In most cases, yes, however there are a few instances where such conversions are not possible.  For example, if it is a domain controller, you cannot.  Reference:

The usual method of changing the key won't work for the trial version. However you can still do. I have done it myself when setting up new VMs for customers.

Open an administrative command prompt and run this:
dism /online /set-edition:ServerStandard /productkey:<product key> /accepteula

Yes.

Elevate CMD:

slmgr -ipk 12345-ABCDE-12345-ABCDE-12345 -ato

Wait for the little doodad pop-up window that says success and done.

Philip, I thinks that's the catch with the trial version is the slmgr command won't work. Have you had success with that?
