Can Sharepoint 2013 use an exchange account?

Can Sharepoint 2013 be setup to use an exchange account not hosted on premise for email services or does it always need a local SMTP?

The answer to the sharepoint question appears to be no it cannot use an account. A local relay can be enabled to 365 though

do you mean to say that Sharepoint 2013 is On premises and exchange is on O365/ Exchange Online?

No, exchange is in an entirely different forest. Used access via different AD account. I need to see what will work from an email perspective for sharepoint if there is no local email system.

yes you can use , provided there should be trust relationship between sharepoint ad forest and exchange ad forest.
