HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 - Hard Drive

Hi,
We have a HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 with raid controller Smart Array P440ar which supports SATA and SAS
There are four 2.5" SATA hard drives attached. each two of them are configured with raid1.

The backplane has 8 bays, so I have another 4 bays to use.
My questions is can I use 2.5" SAS drives for the reset 4 bays. my understanding is the physical interface for SAS and SATA is different. I checked all the 8 intereface they all look the same.
Please advise.

Many Thanks

Hi,

Your HP Smart Array does indeed support Mix and match drives—Support for both Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) drives gives you the flexibility to mix and match these drives in the same enclosure.

Using the HPSSA, you can configure an HP Smart SAS HBA Controller to operate in either RAID or HBA mode. In RAID mode, ProLiant Gen9 SAS HBAs for ProLiant ML/DL servers provide RAID 1, 10 and 5 capabilities. You must use Smart SAS HBAs in one mode or the other – Note that they do NOT support mixed RAID/HBA mode operation.

Cheers

You can plug SATA drives into a SAS port but not the other way round - that was part of the design spec for SAS
