AutoCAD .dwg Can only move entire layer in Visio 2016 not individual shapes.

Hello,
I have an Auto-CAD .dwg that I would like to edit in Visio 2016.  I can convert it but the only thing I can do is move the entire layer with walls and tanks instead of individual shapes.  I've checked witht he person who created this and they assured me the .dwg is not locked and is editable.  Ultimately I would like to be able to move around the shapes to see if there is a better configuration.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

When you say "you can convert it", do you mean that you did this:

Right Click > CAD Drawing Object > Convert... (select all layers)

or that you just got Visio to import it successfully?

When you first import the DWG into Visio, it stays as a "CAD Object". You can turn CAD layers on and off within the object

Right Click > CAD Drawing Object > Properties... > Layer Tab in dialog

Otherwise, when you run the Convert operation and turn the object into myriad Visio shapes. In my tests, they aren't grouped, they are still on the layers assigned to them in the CAD file, and the layers don't appear to be locked.

Layers in Visio aren't meant to be "sheets of vellum", but are simply classifications, so there's no Z-ordering associated with Visio layers. You can select shapes and send-to-back, or bring-to-front. This might help part of your problem. The shortcuts are:

Bring to Front = Shift + Ctrl + F
Send to Back = Shift + Ctrl + B

There are also bring-forward and send-backward commands on the Home > Arrange ribbong/group for "nudging" shapes in the Z-order.

Hello LVL54, I looked at the video, the layer properties didn't have the "lock" checked.

Thanks

I can add visio shapes to the diagram but they seem to be creatred on a lower layer than the one i placed it on.  When I move the original layer I was trying to edit the whole layer moves (as before) but the new visio shape is underneath by itself.

Hello Visio_Guy,
Thanks for the suggestions.  It still moves as a single vellum sheet, I've bounced it back to the creator of the autocad

I wonder if it was a single entity in the original file - some sort of imported bitmap or "vector-chunk" - I'm not sure what AutoCAD is capable of along these lines.

There was no solution to this.  I believe the creator of the file made it uneditable to we would need to pay for modifications.  Thanks for your help everyone
