Hi Hope,

Here's a couple of methods to reset your Windows 10 Home password without needing to download or create a boot device.

Rather than re-invent the wheel all over again here, I'll just link to a couple of pages that explain the process very well.

Online - Microsoft Account

Watch the video on this "If you forgot your Windows admin password, try this" PC World article.

Local - Local User Account

This article describes the manual processes very well - "How to Reset Windows 10 Password If Forgot It" at - In this article, just skip down the page until you get to: "Method 2: Reset Windows 10 local account password with installation CD" and use your Windows 10 DVD to boot with. No download or special boot disks required - a Windows 10 installation DVD is all that's needed.

Sidenote - Please keep your questions and other comments here in the question so that future readers can also benefit from the answers given to you by participating experts. Asking for help via PM doesn't allow for that. Thanks. :)

Hope that's helpful.

Are there any other users on the system that have Administrator privileges?  If so, any of them can reset the password for the problem user.

There are several ways, but we will first need to know whether you normally log into Windows 10 with a Local account, or a Microsoft Connected Account?  If the latter, a password recovery can be done online.

Try Pogo Stick

Make a bootable USB key from the article above, boot with it and reset your password.
The only time changing an account's password impacts the access to files is when one either has EFS or bitlocker encryption set on the files.

If you are regularly forgetting the admin password, is to once you regain access create a second administrative account and since this is your local computer use some combination of your known info, using the hint question as a way to get the correct response, in addition to that create a reset password on a USB. Note, have not done it recently, so do not remember if the password reset media needs to be refreshed after password resets or is .....
Once this is setup, convert the existing account to standard user without a password.

This way you will have most of both worlds. Will gave continuous access to your data, but will be limited to installing stuff unless you remember the password.

If your laptop has a finger print reader, you could look into configuring it ....
But you'll need to see if you can register just a few fingers or all.
may i suggest to NOT forget the password ? then you have no problems
you can use a paper agenda to write it down , or notebook, to keep it on your person

Your password can be easily changed by following the instructions I've provided in this article. No third party downloads required.

Hope that's helpful.
