SharePoint Extreme Notification Delays

I am currently having trouble with my notifications from my SharePoint 2013 site taking between 1 to 2 hours to send out notifications.  This happens for all notification regardless of the community or the user.  I have been looking but the closet thing I have been able to find deals with SharePoint 2010 (Actual Article). Going through central administration & looking into my firewall this is what I have discovered.

  • The firewall is not filtering out or delaying the notifications.  Upon investigation there is only about a 6 delay between the notifications hitting the firewall and being sent out
  • The Immediate Alerts Job (scheduled to execute every 5 minutes)  had not failed
  • The Timer Service Recycle Job has begun to fail regularly starting around the same time as this  
  • There are no other failed jobs that overlap the Timer Service Recycle Job
  • All notifications go out in one giant massive bulk
  • The delay appear to because by SharePoint, there is no evidence of any external conflict

I've been going over this for about a week and a half & am still no closer to narrowing it down.  The closest is a article (click here for Article) telling me to change timer to not conflict with Timer Recycle service Job.  Which I have not been able to find any conflict.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Hi,

Do you see any email (.eml) files in the queue folder under Inetpub\mailroot on the server that runs smtp in the on-prem farm?  If you see the files getting created there and then disappearing, SharePoint is sending the mail out; but, something else is at play here.

This probably goes without saying, in your case, but, In order to see the .eml files in the queue, you need to perform an action that would generate an email (set an alert, or modify a document in a library where you already have an alert for same) then while doing this, have the windows explorer open to the queue folder and keep refreshing it, assuming it is empty, you should see the .eml show up and then disappear.
