MOV files will not play

I have several MOV files I am trying to view. I think they may be corrupt or something. ultimately i want to convert them to another file type. I need some help in finding something that will help me fix them. I am receiving the following error messages.

Windows media Error message:
“Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.”

Quicktime error message:
“Error-2048: Couldn’t open the file 393_0344.MOV because it is not a file that QuickTime understands.”

I think it may be a codec issue.  I did some research and found something called VLC. Before I download anything … are there any other ideas you may have. I don't like to install things that will add adware stuff.

Thank you so much for your help.

VLC is a pretty good tool and typically is a clean install.  I'd give it a try and see what you get.

If the file is corrupt the problem may be recoverable to some extent, or it could be trash, really depends on the file.  You might try to get another copy of it unless it's an original video you created, and you don't have a backup.

I'm not aware of any automatic repair type video software for Windows, but other experts may be...

Download VLC Media Player from the official VideoLAN site and you won't get any adware:

When the Windows Media Player message shows:  "The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file", do you see an option that you can click to allow Media Player to try and open the file anyway?

Hi BillDL. Thanks for your response.  In answer to your question, No, there were no options to click on.

to be sure, copy the mov files to an usb stick, and test them from another system - that will prove if they are ok or not
