Power BI desktop and url connection to SSAS cubes using the http msmdpump.dll. How to?

Power BI desktop and url connection to SSAS  cubes using the http msmdpump.dll. How to?

We have a url setup that gives a user access to our SSAS Cubes in Excel. That works fine no problem. (http://olap.mycubes.com)

But now we have a new user that needs to do the same thing in Power BI.

When I enter the URL in the prompt for server it gives me an "unsupported data format" error.

How do go about doing this for Power BI?

I appreciate the response but I'm just looking to do it myself. Shouldn't be that earth-shattering for me to do. I was looking for Premium Experts Exchange advice like I always get ...not completely outsource the task in its entirety to another developer.

http://biinsight.com/connect-live-power-bi-to-ssas-multidimensional/

The above link provides insight and coupled with your response I can conclude it is indeed possible which answers half my question. I'm just wondering what I'm missing and why I'm getting this immediate timeout error when I try to do it.

I'm using SQL 2014 Standard but also have access to SQL Server 2016 Enterprise if need be. Is that a factor?

Do I need to setup a power BI gateway to do it? I'm missing something.

Yes. I can understand .

For your reference Live connection will not work with standard edition for 2014 or previous version. Only Business intelligence version will support Analysis service live.

SQL server 2016 standard will support live connection.

On Premises Help

And Power Bi gateway is necessary only if you want to publish report to powerbi services and have live connection to your data source
