IPhone hotspot

I have a Droid phone. When my internet is down I turn on my hotspot and connect my laptop to the phone's hotspot. For this to work I need to turn off WIFI so my phone uses cellar connection. If I keep WIFI on, the phone tries to go out the WIFI which does not have internet.

I have been told that this configuration does not work with an IPhone. You need to keep the WIFI on or the hotspot will not work.

How can the IPhone hotspot work if it is connected to WIFI that does not have internet access? Does the IPhone realize there is not an Internet so it knows to  go out the cellular connection? Why would it not work if WIFI is off?

You were told incorrectly. Fire up your iPhone, Settings, Personal Hotspot and set it up. Then use your computer wireless to pick it up. I have done this without issue.

The Iphone doesn't need Wifi in order to work as a personal hotspot! As mentioned by John Hurst just set it up and you're good to go and make sure your bluetooth is on as well.

@adratch - the above advice is not completely clear.

If you have WiFi and Bluetooth turned off then iPhone hotspot will not work - obviously as the phone needs some method to share its connection.

If you attempt to activate the Hotspot with WiFi and Bluetooth OFF then the iOS system will advise you that you need to enable Bluetooth AND WiFi (this may be where your contact assumed that the iPhone needs both)

However the Hotspot service will work with WiFi OR Bluetooth enabled it doesn't need both just one of the two.  Bluetooth sharing is primarily used to share the Hotspot with other OSX devices .. the WiFi option also works to share the Internet connection to other devices.

Remember that if the Hotspot service is enabled and WiFi is turned on then the WiFi is used to share the Hotspot connection and not connect to other WiFi networks .. that is how you can have Hotspot & WiFi enabled

As soon as you select Hotspot this message will appear on your iPhone.

if you select Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth it automatically disconnect your internet through WIFI and uses cellular connection to provide internet, and use WIFI to broadcast that internet to your PC.

Note: if your WIFI is already on, then you will not see that message and as soon as you select Hotspot your iPhone will disconnect internet on WIFI and will switch to  cellular connection and starts to broadcast it with WIFI.

Ramin, does this mean when you use a hotspot on your IPhone, the data will always go out the cellular connection even if you do have a wifi internet access?

Correct.  You CANNOT use the WiFi to connect the iPhone to the Internet when the same phone is providing Hotspot services to other devices over WiFi.

You data only uses ONE connection and you must use Cellular and then your Hotspot as I suggested at the beginning here.

Yes exactly. and even if your  cellular internet for any reason stops providing internet then your hotspot also stops providing internet ( it will not use your WIFI internet).

as a simple sentence, Hotspot or WIFI internet.
