Free version of VMware Workstation

I am planning to run VMware Workstation 14 for personal use. I read that there is a free version of VMware vSphere in the following question:

correct
there is the vmware player which has some functionality but workstation is paid

Vsphere refers to an ESX environment, a hypervisor running on bare metal.  
The hardware needs to be on the VMWare HCL.

I use VMware Workstation V14 on my computer and it works great. It has more features than VMware Player and is worth the cost to license. I recommend it.

Correct, there is NO FREE version of VMware Workstation, you can evaluate for FREE for 30 days.

VMware vSphere, ESXi is a different bare metal product, which is FREE if you register for a license.
