Get rid of shortcut virus from pc

Is there a manual method to do this ?

most of the time this virus comes from the USB drive, external media card.
1 - Remove those medias and check there is no other external drive plugged in
2.  Disconnect from the Internet. But before this, try to update your AV signature.
3. Enter the Safe Mode and run Disc Cleanup or anything that deletes all your temp files
4. In safe mode, try to run separate scanner such as below (2nd opinion check)
> Rogue Killer http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/
> Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
5. Once clear, try running specific remover such as below
> Shortcut Virus Remover - http://www.shortcutvirusremover.com/
- This remover affects on .lnk files, because of that don't use it in internal hard disk (download it directly to your Flash Drive).
6. See any other symptoms resurfaced, observe for one to 2 days. Consider a rebuild of machine if unable to clean up.

Fixing the result of the virus, yes

From the drive run:
attrib -r -a -s -h /d *.*

Removing the virus depends on the actual strain. What AV are you running?

first download antivirus and clean it. there is tons of free antiviruses like kaspersky, sophos, avast
then download attribute changer https://www.petges.lu/pubfiles/ac-900a.exe
you should allow viewing hidden files, go to usb drive, remove all the hidden files that are not yours, check select all, right click, change attributes and remove the hidden and system checks.

A step by step manual method of removing the Shortcut Virus is also provided in this Article on the iTechFever website. The article also explains how the virus spreads.

I hope that's helpful.

How do you use it to prevent infections entering your pc ?

Shaun VermaakTechnical Specialist/DeveloperCommented:
Install it on computer. When you insert USB it deleted the malicious shortcuts and unhides folders. It technically does not remove the actual virus binary

Disable Autoplay and Autorun. Do not explore files on the connected USB storage before scanning with the antivirus program. Alternative to USB fox is smadv

What are your thoughts on smadav and does it help prevent the pc from getting infected ?

btanExec ConsultantCommented:
Like any other apps, will not solrly depends on it though it has quite a feature list. Like heuristic & whitelisting (file reputation), anti exe, detect ransowmare, automatically unhide files in USB Flashdisk, etc. best is not autorun USB directly and scan it before use.

Shaun VermaakTechnical Specialist/DeveloperCommented:
Best is to block execution from USB. Shortcut virus does not depend on autorun

Do you think having a paid antivirus can help a lot? Thinking of getting Bitdefender as I've been hearing good reviews about it ?

btanExec ConsultantCommented:
Not really about paid but it does turn on feature like blocking and cleaning etc compared to trial version.
Actually AV has on demand scan and on access real time scanning that is to protect you. But it is as good as the signature available for the virus.
Autorun and autoplay does not stop it but it minimise a direct execution of the virus, if any.
In any case, you will still need the functio (not trial) anti malware in place and some (SEP) may even  make the USB readonly but does not stop you if you run the spoofed executable from USB. Still need vigilance on hygiene from user end.

So I'm trying a combination of avast and smadav and it seems to be working fine

To my knowledge, UsbFix is the best solution for shortcut virus. It's a plug and play standalone software.

Other than that, there are 5 other shortcut virus removing methods.
