Upgrade to Windows 10

is there a way to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10?  I've been trying to do this with the CD but I'm not having no luck.  I tried to download an upgrade tool but it's failing.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Does the upgrade process get to the Driver Update page?

1. If the update does not get as far as Driver Updates, then you may wish to check the hard drive.
2. If the update fails at Drive Update, the machine may have a drive compliance or other hardware compliance issue.

If you have a back up of the machine, try doing a fresh install instead of upgrade.

I downloaded the media creation too and that seems to be working...

Let it download (takes a while) then start to run (takes more time) then it gets to a screen Updating Drivers. See how it does on that and if it passes that. If so, it may proceed to install.

One simple way is to start up from the Windows installation CD or USB. This ignores all OS issues that might impact the installation and jumps directly into the upgrade process. It is achievable by holding down one of the function keys on the top of your keyboard. The exact key varies across different hardware. Check your hardware manufacturer for the exact key combo.

If the OS is (say) an old version of Symantec Endpoint, this must be uninstalled before proceeding, so take care skipping through errors that should be resolved.

why not backup your data and do a fresh install?
you can copy the data out by booting from a live cd - or hooking the drive to a working pc

I think that's what I'm going to need to do.  I didn't want to do a fresh install because of the things I have installed, however, I'm getting no where trying to upgrade.
i agree it's a bit of work - but often it saves time in the end..
