How to stop Office 365 from hanging on synchronizing Inbox?

I have a computer running Win 10 with Office 365.  Now this computer is hanging on Outlook with synchronizing inbox and no new e-mail is coming in.   It seemed to be working ok earlier today.  What can be done to stop this from hanging?

If you are having this issue and it continues. You can try to repair Outlook profile.

If it is a large mailbox, try turning down the retention in Outlook's cached mode settings.  You may have to recreate the profile if it does not work with just the change.  If the mailbox size isn't an issue I would try the repair above.

The repair comes up saying it doesn't work for this issue.  
How do I turn down the retention?
I have already recreated the profile and this is what is happening.

Actually the synchronizing seems to have stopped but the send/receive is hung up and it only allows e-mail to come in bunches.  So if an e-mail is sent and Outlook goes to Send Receive all folders it takes hours for the Send Receive to finish.

I ran scanpst, it found multiple errors, repaired them, but this is still happening with synchronization and send/receive.

For Outlook 2016 (Outlook 365 is not a valid version) Go to account settings and click on the email box account and click change, the retention for cache is there. Outlook 2013 should be similar, Outlook 2010 and earlier do not have this feature.  This may help if the mailbox size is excessive.
