How long should it take to backup my 450 GB database to my external USB 3.0 Buffalo drive its stuck on 10% been going for 8 hours

How long will it take to backup my SQL database 450 GB from my c drive to an external Buffalo Terastation thru a 3.0 USB?

It should not take 8 hours. Are you doing a true sql backup or just copying it to the usb drive? I would kill the current backup and start over make sure to connect the buffalo to a rear usb port. You  should be doing a SQL backup then backup the .bak files to the usb. If you are not doing a SQL backup here are the steps in case you need them.

In this article you'll find a script that returns the % of completion for a backup command. This should show you how much it's already done.
You can also do a simple calculation of the necessary time, by getting the average speed of your USB drive so you can know how long it should take for a 450GB backup.
By the way, if the database is being used during the backup, it will only make the backup taking longer.
