Surface Pro 3 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709' fails

Has anyone had success with the Surface Pro 3 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709' (fall creators update)?

Currently the update is failing with error 0x80070057.

I have tried...
 - disable antivirus
 - sfc /scannow
 - boot to safe mode, reset windows update
 - run windows update troubleshooter
 - install surfacepro driver updates
 - run surface diagnostic toolkit
..but still same error.

Next up, I will try turning off the wifi, as in resolution 1 here...

But meanwhile, any recommendations?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. The windows 10 fall creators update is one of the worst feature updates to get in. Access denied an other issues are sadly quite common.

1.)  Backup all your data off of your computer /tablet unto in external hard drive or usb sticks. Just in case you kill the Windows 10 OS

2.)  The  sfc /scannow  is a great idea along with all your other thoughts of getting it in

3.)  I also try dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth  and make sure it comes back clean

So what I do is the 1.) , 2.) and 3)  Then I create the USB media creation with x86 and X64 (with 95% of all newer pcs being x64)
[Note:  You need to wipe the USB sticks and format them with NTFS and use disk manager to wipe all of the partitions etc off that usb stick before trying to create this Media USB Stick]

This is how I have the best luck in getting fall creators update

4.)  How to use the Microsoft Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Note: [Be sure that you use a blank empty USB stick for this bootable USB iamge ]

What can I computer fails while installing Windows updates or will not boot to Windows?

This article provides information on how to create and use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. You can use this tool to restore your system if it will not boot to Windows or if it fails to start after installing a Windows update. Symptoms you may experience are:

    System continually restarts
System boots to a black screen
    Windows Updates fail to install

This process requires another PC with internet access, and a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage space. The data on the USB flash drive will be erased to create the Windows 10 bootable flash drive.
Creating the Windows 10 USB flash drive

Visit the Microsoft Media Creation Tool website
    Click Download Tool Now.
    Save the Application.
Plug your USB Flash Drive into the PC where you saved the application.
    Run the Application.
    Accept the EULA
Select Create installation media for another PC and click Next.
Choose the correct settings for your version of Windows 10
        Language (Country)
        Windows 10
        64-bit (x64)
    Click Next.
Select USB Flash Drive and click Next.
Select the Flash Drive and click Next.

Allow the application to complete. You will be prompted when it is finished and has successfully created the bootable drive.
Reloading Windows with the Media Creation Tool:

Boot back into windows and  run setup from within the running OS

Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings and applications. This option should work for most users and should save most personal files. If you attempt this and run into errors, we suggest the next option.

Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) This option allows you to determine the location where you want to install Windows. Using this option will erase all personal data.

5.)  Using the USB Creation tool and installing from within windows makes it upgrade option only.  I have had very high success getting the version 1709 update install this way.

Hopefully it will work for you...:-)

You should upload the setuperr.log found in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther
Some showstoppers are: Nero burning software, Samsung Magician and any other software that uses virtual device drivers (for ISO mounting, firewalls, encryption). I would also uninstall AV software, not disable it.

Mcknife, thanks for the tip on the virtual device drivers...Greatly appreciated as our shop sees a lot of machines
coming in that will not install feature updates every 6 months from Microsoft. :-)
Active Protection takes the fight to cryptojacking

Thanks to those who responded... the bevtech and McKnife solutions pointed me in the right direction.

I finally found the problem... it was a legacy driver filter.  The command 'fltmc filters' showed the likely suspects, and googling each one, i came across the culprit, cbfltfs4.  A little more googling, and discovered it was from a program called 'homedrive' on the customer laptop.

Apparently it is a 'known' problem... Homedrive: Cannot update to Windows Feature 1709

Disabled the driver, installed the update, re-enabled the driver, all good.
Great. Now close the question, please.
