I don't see why you can't do that. Are you using the Android contact list application or something third party?
Please include what error you are getting when you try to edit.

default android contact app
So you didn't mention what error. However for me I just select a contact and go to details. From there I select edit at the top of the screen and change the email.

Keep in mind that is for Android contacts. If your contact list is synched to somewhere else you might not be able to edit here.

Phone manufacturers often install their own version of a default android app. Are you sure it's the default android contacts app? What kind of phone do you have? Have you tried using other contact management apps?

could you recommend contact management app where i can change MY email address
The Android app for Google Contacts has this functionality. If you don't have this app you can download it from the Google Play Store. Click on the 3 dot overflow menu at the top right > select all (or select whichever contacts you want to move) > 3 dot overflow menu again > move > select the correct google account (email address) you want to associate with the contacts list.

I tried on a new phone that has just been wipped
there are no gmail contacts

there are 5 phone contacts

I can not edit "phone" ownership of those 5 contacts
You wiped the phone, didn't setup a google account, and the phone has 5 contacts?

A second phone

Not the original phone I was using for the original question.
At this point I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do and what you've done so far. Can you please try to re-state the question more clearly?

2 android phones

both when i use contacts app

i am asked question about ownership off a single contact

this textbox can not be edited
Can you please try to use whole sentences and describe the problem as completely as possible? I'm still not sure what you're asking.

What about two phones?
Both what when you use contacts app?
What did you do in order to see the prompt asking about ownership of a contact?
What text box can not be edited and how are you trying to edit it?

the contact email ?
my email (which has many other contacts attached to it)?
I'm sorry I still don't understand what you're asking. At this point I'm going to request attention on your question and see who else can help you. Good luck, I hope you get your answer.
Is this a phone where someone else is the administrator, such as a work phone? If so then you might not be able to change the email?

it is my phone

i am testing on 2 phones

please create 2 (or more) gmail accounts on android phone
and then add a contact

notice how one field (the gmail account)
can not be changed in the contact
As far as I can tell I already went over that in an earlier comment. The contact applications on my phone allow me to move a contact between different google accounts using the steps I outlined in this previous comment. I'm not sure why your phone wouldn't allow you to move the contacts.
