You'll "probably" need to force disk 01 back online. Do you know if one drive was already offline or blinking amber prior to the crash?

Disk 01 looks like it was blinking amber, there is an option to force that disk back on line, but I didnt know if it was the right step to take or it would cause more issues.

So if disk 01 failed some time ago, and disk 02 failed today, taking the array/VD offline, then forcing disk 01 online will corrupt your data. It's important to know what is going on so in the event you have to do something like this you know if it is safe to proceed. My "guess" is that disk 02 was already failed, then the VD went offline when disk 01 failed, but we don't know that. If you do not have a backup, you could boot to a live Dell support disk to pull a controller log to find out which one was the last to fail. The only thing you can do with a "failed" drive is rebuild it, and you can't rebuild it if the VD is not already online (and degraded). The only thing you can do with an "offline" drive in an offline VD is force it back online. If you were to investigate and find that somehow disk 02 was the last to fail, the only option at that point would be to delete the VD, then recreate it without initializing (called a retag) - a last resort.

Hi PowerEdge,

Thank you, so I forced disk on online and the server is booting back up, taking a long time its going through a chkdsk. If it does come back up we want to backup and  capture it an create a VM. Also disk 0 and 1 are flashing as if it's rebuilding.

Question, at this point what do we do to fix the issue if it comes back online?
jaya31Author Commented:
At this point, both drive 1 and 2 are blinking amber and windows chckdsk is going through a unreadable sectors. Bad.

If it does come back up? You'll need to rebuild disk 02, but I would test the disks to see if one or more are actually bad first. If it seems to be working, and you get healthy disks in and the array rebuilt, then you will need to run a consistency check and update the system firmware.

Hi Poweredge,

Thank you very much. Right now both disk 1 and 2 are blinking amber. Windows is scrolling through chkdsk unreadable sectors. I'm going to leave it to complete what ever it has to for now and report back. Thanks again.

Hi PowerEdge,

Thanks much for the help, I did exactly as you said and it work, brought disk 1 online and the option for disk 2 was repair. I need to open a new question at this stage and hoping you see it to comment. Thanks again.
