What version of ESXI do you recommend for new servers?

What version of ESXI do you recommend for new HP ML350 Gen 9 servers?
We plan to create a DC with server 2016 and another instance with server 2016 for teh SQL instance.
We need to create 2x virtual instances VM, one for the domain controller and another for SQL services.
We had ESX5 running before but we having issues with drivers when trying to load.
Is this software still free? It looks like version 6 is chargeable.
Thanks in advance.

There's nothing wrong with VMware... but Hyper-V is built in and from a performance and reliability standpoint, it's on par with VMWare.
