VSS fails everytime a backup job runs

I am having a VSS problems with my windows server.  I am running windows 2008 R2.
I am testing arcserve software, and on one specific server, everytime the backup runs, it fails because of a VSS error.
All my other servers are fine.

Tried multiple things, nothing has worked.
1. tried to register the DLL's
https://kb.datto.com/hc/en-us/articles/200554805-Re-Registering-VSS-DLL-Binaries-in-32-bit-and-64-bit-Environments

2. tried the following KB, but the registry entry was already there
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2009513/backups-fails-with-vss-event-id-12292-and-11-on-windows-server-2008-an

3. ran acronis program
https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/vss-diagnostic-free-tool/

Nothing has worked.  Any ideas how to fix my vss problem?

Hi,

Is the failing server is VM? if so, do you have snapshot of the server?. If the problematic server has snapshot then delete the the snapshot's and check the issue.

Have you checked with Acronis? the next suggestion would be logging a case with them, probably they might have seen it before and can suggest you in the right direction.

Hello,

You made the tests of the link.

Also please validate that the VM where you are doing the backup, do not have snapshot present, if so delete it.

Additional validates the vm where you have installed the backup utility and validates in the properties of the VM that has not attacked the disk of the server where you want to do the backup.

I am using scale computing as my hyperconvergance system, i am NOT using acronis.
I only used the acronis free VSS doctor tool.
I have backups of the server for the past 5 days, but I discovered the issue prior to that.

Goodnight,

Can you please validate the event viewer and tell us the events corresponding to the VSS and if you can share the screen printer, please.

Yes, during the backup was taken, there was no error's or warnings, only info messages.

There's a lot of these messages during that time, but no errors or warnings, and the backups of arcserve still fail.

Have you seen my previous update?

DanNetwork EngineerAuthor Commented:
Radhakriishnan, I'm not running hyperV or vmware, so there are NO snapshots, scale computing does not use that technology.
The problem is either on the backup server or on the VM being backed up, but I can't figure out exactly where the problem is.

Hi,

Thanks for the confirmation about my query.

Could you check your physical drives and see if VSS is limited with size? I.e - Right click on C drive>>Properties>>Shadow copies>>select each volume and settings>>then 'Use limit' or 'No limit' . This issue can happen if the desired size is over.

Also, do you have any option to use it's own VSS instead of MS VSS for the backup?  like this https://kb.acronis.com/content/22373

there's no limit, but could this be the problem, it looks like the next run time is disabled, should I enable that?
are there some global settings for show copies, maybe it's disabled or something in the registry?

Good afternoon,

Please validate according to the printer, the settings option to validate the limit allowed when creating the shadow copy.

I recommend adding another virtual disk to the VM where you want to do the backup and in accordance with the last printer enable the option of Shadow Copies and then try to backup the VM to validate if it works.

It would be as follows., Enable the shadow copy and then make the backup.

Thanks guys for your input, I discovered the problem, my software vendor had uninstalled and reinstalled the backup agent, deleted the backups and now it's working again, so it wasn't the Vss, but rather something got corrupt in the backup software.
