Exchange search function doesn't work, why?

This is using MS Exchange server 2016, fully migrated from Exchange 2013. Now, in outlook, when user want to search for any mail by keyword, etc, they got blank. This problem didn't happened with exch 2013 server alone. I remember back to the exch 2010 time, there is a certain steps to "rebuild the search index". Do we have to do the same step to get the searching work?

Thanks in advance.

Have you attempted restarting the server?

Could also be an issue with the version of Office that is installed ... https://support.office.com/en-us/article/No-Search-results-found-when-using-All-Mailboxes-3a982433-cfdf-46f3-bae1-d9c50d79bebd

Hi,

Does search work when logged via OWA?

Run command on server, to check in what state Indexing is>
Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus * | sort name | Select name, status, contentindexstate

If state is failed, you can use following procedure to try and repair it> https://practical365.com/exchange-server/exchange-2016-failed-content-index/
Do have in mind, that this procedure could take some time to finish, depending on DB size.

PS> As Gaurav suggested, try with restart first.

Ivan.

Hi,
If your search in Outlook is not working properly or not displaying the result based on the search, then it is due to issue in Windows Indexing Service. And, yes! You need to rebuild the Indexing service. The below is a document about how to rebuild index when Outlook search not working.

Hope it might help you!!
