looking to Encrypt external backup media

Hi, I am looking for a way to encrypt external media for security.  We use RD1000 tapes for backup, using a backup program called GSCopy, that program copies open files using VSS it also backs up raw data, so it is very visible on the media to anyone who has access to the unit.

I was wondering if I can do like a bitlocker on that drive, so it is accessible to the server that backs up to it, but will be a paperweight to any one who gets it without the code.

Thanks all.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

As far as I know, tapes are encryptable with bitlocker. take an empty tape and try it, to make sure.

can you use bitlocker on an external drive?

Yes, you can. You can set it up to auto-unlock only on that machine.

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

Thanks, can it auto-unlock then backup, then auto lock again via a script?

You can, but no need to do that  unless you fear that your backup account executes ransomware or the like (why should it?).
But anyway:
manage-bde -lock x:
would be the command to lock drive x:, unlocking would be either done automaically when connecting the drive and your user account is logged on or using manage-bde -unlock x: -rp 111111-222222-....yourrecoverykey-......666666

Did you try to bitlock tapes by now? I would be interested. Documentation on BL and tapes is very poor, just found one source that said you can and it wasn't Microsoft.

thanks mcknife.  I tried and it didn't work on my rdx tapes.  I could on a usb drive.  I ended up finding a piece of software for it its called rdx encription software
