QuickBooks not responding when using VPN Netextender

I am using Quickbooks Enterprise in multi mode on my network. The Database manager and files are all stored on a local server. When I am on my LAN everything works great. I am trying to use my Sonicwall/ Netextender vpn connection into my LAN. I connect fine and open files and folders on the server no issue. I launch Quickbooks, select the company to open and sign in with username and password. Thats when Quickbooks locks up and stops responding. Anyone have any ideas on this one? The only thing I cant get to work on the vpn is Quickbooks.

Hi Ross,

I have used QB via NetExtender for years without issue but I always VPN'ed then RDP'd to a machine and used QB there - its much more stable that way. I'd recommend you VPN and then use RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) into an actual machine...that should resolve your issue. Do you have Tunnel All Mode enabled or not?

You can do a Packet Capture from either NetExtender or the SonicWALL appliance to source the root of the problem.

Let me know if you have any questiosn!

QuickBooks is a very chatty database and does not work the way you are trying to use it.

Better way:  VPN into your Office Machine and use QB on the Office Machine with a LAN connection. Works much better.

I am trying to get away from having to use 2 machines for QuickBooks access. It does work just fine if I use netextender and RDP into another machine running Quickbooks. I am wanting to be able to deploy mobile workers one laptop and be able to use Quickbooks via VPN connection and not an RDP.
Surely there has to be a way to use it remotely and not just on the LAN.

Remote connection for QB can damage the database. Consider Terminal Server for a number of users

From my experience there isn't...I hate QB but SMBs don't have many options. QB as a networked program has always suffered.

I'd recommend migrating to QBO (QuickBooks Online). Every client that as migrated has never looked back and it alleviates infrastructure needs like what you are running into.

Thanks for the help guys. Guess I will look into QuickBooks Online or continue to remote into a machine after connecting.

You welcome. QB Enterprise is probably more capable than QB Online although Online is decent
