Mozilla Thunderbird producing strange characters in outgoing email messages

Greetings wise wizards of EE:

I'm helping a friend with a Windows 7 laptop in which she uses Mozilla Thunderbird for her e-mail application. Roughly two weeks ago, Thunderbird started producing odd characters within her outgoing e-mail, though these messages appear find to her. Here is a sample:

<<I'm still getting responses from folks with a few of those weird signs.�See below.� When I check the default text they are both Western ISO.� Any other ideas as to what to do?>>

I Googled this dilemma, and the general answer was to adjust the font settings as follow:

Open Thunderbird
Under Fonts & Colours, click on Advanced.
At the bottom of the next window, under "Text Encoding" you can select the default encoding. Here you can choose "Unicode (UTF-8)".

This encoding was already the default... we tried switching to "Western", and this worked for a few days, but the problem re-appeared.

I am grateful for any help with this annoying issue.

That looks like UTF-8 text displayed on a Western/Latin1 display.  That can also happen if the UTF-8 text is displayed in a plain text window which is also usually Latin1 on a Windows machine.  It will look fine to her because her machine is reading her text properly as UTF-8.

May I ask if this problem happens to all recipients? She can read her emails fine, sometimes the problem is from the other side.

I am closing this question, as no solution was found, and there have been no further posts to this inquiry. My friend is going to migrate to Outlook due to this unresolved issue.

Though I am grateful for the posts, there were no solutions offered... just a statement of a possible cause and an inquiry, with no further posts. Unfortunately my friend will have to use another application for her e-mail, as she cannot continue with this issue.
