MBR and GPT on Window Server

When Window Server is first installed, does it default the disk to MBR ? Can I change it to GPT afterwards ?

What's the big difference between MBR and GPT ? Should OS be better installed with MBR ?

Thx

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Depends a bit on BIOS available (normal or UEFI) and disk size. Also if you need a lot of partitions or not.
If you HDD is not bigger than 2TB, and you only have 4 or less partitions, no need to bother checking.

Cannot easily change it afterwards

GPT has other benefits like the MBR is stored in multiple locations instead of one. My recommendation is that if your hardware supports it, use it.

Yes. Usually MBR is set by default. You can change it later with a little effort.

MBR supports up to 2TB of disk size and up to 4 partitions...
GPT - "no" limit and up to 128 partitions
This is the biggest difference between them.

If you use UEFI go for GPT. Otherwise I would use MBR. There is no need to boot to GPT disks unless that disk is larger than 2 TB.

No, it depends on the firmware - if the system is UEFI it will AUTOMATICALLY use GPT regardless of disk size.  The only reason it may be "usually" MBR is because you USUALLY use BIOS based systems.

If you consider reloading Windows to be "little effort", then sure.
