Alternative to Hosted Exchange Service

I have an user who uses Road Runner (now Spectrum) email service ( and I like to to get him moved over to Microsoft hosted exchange service with domain name ( so that his email resides in MS cloud server and his iPhone (via Exchange account) and Outlook software can synchronize the data in the cloud all the time. However he does not want to spend money ($4/month for hosted exchange, domain name $15/year via Godaddy = $53/year).
Does Gmail provide something similar to Microsoft Hosted Exchange service where he can sync up his Outlook and iPhone?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

From pricing standpoint, Gmail basic service which is $5/month costs about the same as Microsoft hosted exchange service.

Basically, you're saying my user wants something for nothing.  Sorry, not really going to do it.  The Domain Name is NOT free.  Though you can find better pricing than GoDaddy, but not by that much.  There are plenty of free email services... if you use an Android phone, you can easily sync the Google contacts and the mail with the phone... Not sure about the iPhone, but I don't think it will do contacts that easily.

Unfortunately he will have to spend a little. just select the one that is least expensive and go with it. Nothing is really free. He get a free service he will loose features so spending a little may be worth it.

Could not agree more. I think I will suggest MS hosted exchange service to the user.
