2) If you were on your cell phone in L.A. and called a cell phone in New York would the call go wireless or wired most of the way?

The range of a regular cell phone tower (a) is quite short and (b) depends on height. If I leave a major highway near me, cell phone service ceases 3 to 5 Kilometers off the highway (lots of phone towers as it is a busy highway.

As to how the signal travels over a long distance, it depends on the tower and land line design . No set way.  But it always works.

I am not talking specifics. I realize  that there are too many variables. Like how hi the tower is, directions, hills, etc. I am just talking in general terms....

I would like a little more detail in the L.A. to New York too. At 3-5km it couldn't possible go wireless all the way. Just a general method is fine.....

LA to New York can bounce tower to tower for some of the time and use underground fiber for some / a lot of the distance.
