"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What kind of computer? At least one HP model won't run Creator Update.

Try the Media Creation link and update manually.

Windows 10 is running, so click on the Download button (not Upgrade Button, select Open (Run) but NOT Save. Allow the program to run. Allow drivers to update. Then select Keep Everything.

You offer no details about what you did and don't connect the two things (upgrade failure & recovery usage) you mention. Please  do that now.

It is a Micro Center PowerSpec PC.  The client has three other identical PCs who have upgraded successfully.

I have used the upgrade tool, windows update, and the creator update.  All run, but after the reboot stall, fail, and freeze at 83%.

Microsoft then restores windows to its previous version.

Check that BIOS, Chipset and Video are up to date. Current BIOS is needed for the latest Windows Updates.

Does it have a hard drive (not SSD)?  Use the manufacturer's hard drive test tool to test the drive.

If you are sure all is good to go, back it up and do a fresh install of Windows 10.

Other notes:

I attempted to create a recovery drive
- Windows has said files are missing

I attempted registry repairs with CC Cleaner
- No change to upgrade errors or freezes at 83%

I have downloaded a windows.iso file in an attempt to reset/repair the computer.  The computer gets stuck attempting repairs.

I used dism /online /cleaup-restore.  Microsoft reported a successfully cleanup but it had no effect on the upgrade issues.
Jack MurphyOwnerAuthor Commented:
I will check the bios.  It is likely an out of date bios.
Jack MurphyOwnerAuthor Commented:
Well, this seems ridiculous to me, but power spec has no bios updates available.  Anywhere for any of their machines.  I'm just not sure if this is a corrupt windows os, or a driver related issue.
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I suggest you proceed with a backup and fresh install to eliminate corrupt Windows OS.  That will also do some driver updates from the Microsoft Update Catalogue.

Agreed.  This machine upgraded from a windows seven os during the free upgrade period.  If I do a fresh install will I lose my activation?  I'm not sure how to retain the activation code?
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
It is running Windows 10 , so NO, it does not lose activation. It will find the licensing on the Microsoft Licensing Server.
