Synching outlook and gmail cal and contacts

I have a client who needs to sync his outlook 2016 (office 365) with his gmail contacts and calendar both bi-directionally.  His gmail is a regular one, not a business one.  Also why on earth isn't the desktop outlook 2016 synching with the cloud version of office 365, should actually be difficult to do in 2018?  Thanks, gsgi

Sync'ing of Gmail contact calendar/contact items requires a 3rd party addin or the account needs to be upgraded to a Google business account at which point Google's G-Suite can be used

G Suite Sync for Microsoft Outlook®

If you're you're still referring to the Gmail account, it would be configured either as an IMAP or POP3 account which does not sync contact/calendar data with the server. This not specific to Outlook but how POP3/Imap accounts work in any email client, Any email client that does sync Google contact/calendar info has included an extension the client to perform that function. In Oulook, without any kind of 3rd party addins, you require an Outlook.com/Exchange account which sync's all data.
