Macbook Air External Hard Drive

Hi all, we have a macbook air that we use here solely for backing up 2 ipads and some iphones, however it is running low on space and we dont want to use icloud.

I am thinking to use an external hard drive to store some older backups to free up space.

What do guys recommend?

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's not perfect for but for me, nothing less that a 2-bay NAS with mirrored hard drives.

IMO, I don't hate myself enough to backup a single external USB hard drive.  :)
I find it a waste of money to buy any home NAS RAID system.  It's much cheaper and more robust or secure to buy multiple external disks and take at least one offline and offsite.  If you're also frequently sharing with a Windows system, then get a Seagate external drive because they come with a free paragon license for to read and write NTFS on Seagate drives.  You can set your Mac to write NTFS, but the Paragon software is just easier for the non-technical person to deal with.

If you're not deduplicating, you can even buy flush mount USB and SD cards and increase the storage.
